A Santa Clarita Toastmaster spoke at TEDx Camarillo

Linnaea Mallette, DTM, a member of two Santa Clarita clubs, Daybreak Santa Clarita and Advanced Speakers of LA, is one of 12 speakers at the Saturday TEDx event.

The theme for TEDx Camarillo was Unabridged. This theme alluded to telling the whole story, uncut, and uncensored. The venue was the Camarillo Public Library, where unabridged collections are a common offering.

Linnaea is also one of two Toastmasters sponsoring a new Toastmasters club called Stagemasters. The club is a coaching style club where Toastmasters who have completed the Competent Communication manual can extend their speaking skills and learn techniques and staging skills for events such as TEDx and TED.

Santa Clarita Toastmasters clubs are open to all with the exception of the Advanced Speakers of LA which is open to Toastmasters who have achieved a Competent Communications level or greater and Neuro Orators, a corporate club for employees of Boston Scientific.

What makes Toastmasters Stand Out as a Public Speaking and Leadership Program?

Since 1924, Toastmasters has been a self-paced program where members are evaluated and given targeted feedback for the objectives of the speaking or leadership project they are presenting. Santa Clarita Toastmasters

Santa Clarita Toastmasters meetings use a proven self-paced method teaching anyone to become less afraid of public speaking, more comfortable speaking impromptu, skilled at making presentations, conducting meetings, holding seminars and talking on subjects for business or pleasure.

Santa Clarita Toastmasters clubs have meetings in the early AM, as well as the early PM. In every meeting, there is an opportunity to participate in a meeting role all designed to give members growth opportunities and challenges.

How Does It Work?

  • A Toastmasters meeting is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a no-pressure atmosphere. A typical group has 20 to 40 members who meet weekly, biweekly or monthly. A typical meeting lasts 60–90 minutes.
  • There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success. Meeting participants also give impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings and develop skills related to timekeeping, grammar and parliamentary procedure.
  • Members learn communication skills by working in the Competent Communication manual, a series of 10 self-paced speaking assignments designed to instill a basic foundation in public speaking.
  • Members also learn leadership skills by taking on various meeting roles and working in the Competent Leadership manual. In our learn-by-doing approach, we don’t lecture members about leadership skills; we give them responsibilities and mentoring to help. Then we ask them to lead.
