A Laconic Meeting of Toastmasters

Daybreak Toastmasters Meeting RoomWhen Daybreak Santa Clarita meets, it is for one hour only on a workday. All the members know they need to be laconic so that we have time for everything. Our General Evaluator, Marcia Bruce Bush, Distinguished Toastmaster, gave us an overview of that task at the last meeting. It is not just speaking less, it is speaking more succinctly.

Laconic was the word of the day, hand picked by Grammarian of the meeting, Don Cogan, Distinguished Toastmaster.

The fourteen members and guest in the room were encouraged to use the word of the day each time they spoke as a participant at the meeting.

You can read more about this meeting and other Daybreak information at our club website.

Advanced Speakers of LA Hosts World Champion of Public Speaking

World Champion of Public Speaking, Lance Miller, came to observe 5 speakers deliver his World Champion Speech.

Have you ever thought “I could be a great speaker if I just had the right speech?” Advanced Speakers of LA tested that theory on Monday night at Barnes and Noble in Valencia.2 Speakers were prepared to deliver the speech as they had received it a couple of weeks before. The other 3 were chosen to deliver it with little or no practice time. Here are pictures from this very different Toastmasters club event.

Advanced Speakers of LA uses a Round Robin Evaluation Technique to bring out the best in every speaker. If you comp0leted the CC manual and want more, ASLA is the place to be on the 4th MOnday of the month at Branes and Noble Booksellers Community Room.

Getting to Cruising Altitude

Daybreak Meeting September 28, 2017 – Getting to Cruising Altitude
Word of the day: Loquacious

Don Cogan as Toastmaster picked a theme centered around flight and getting to cruising altitude in our speaking careers.

Circe gave a PowerPoint presentation about her father using images of him throughout his life.

Deborah did speech #7 Research your Topic with PowerPoint images about the Titanic. This was her first use of PowerPoint during a speech. Congratulations!

Michael helped us with Impromptu speaking and used questions about Santa Clarita to encourage us to speak off the cuff. Kathleen Lubin, District Director was our first Table Topics Victimeer and spoke about the District and Toastmasters. John (a guest) actually said YES to trying Table Topics. – He told us about his peanut adventure. Laurie shared with us her favorite comedian and why. Edgar (another guest) got brave enough to jump up to the front of the room and talk.

Lourdes did a detailed listening job catching Paula, Boo, Sally, Don, Mike and Linnaea using the word of the day, loquacious. Boo caught many ah’s and ums and a few so’s in our speaking. Paula caught Circe going overtime for her talk!!! Great job being Timer today.

We had two new members join. We welcome Kathleen Lubin, District Director, DTM back to Daybreak and her guest Rosalie Belasario to our membership.

What a way to start the morning hour with great stories and conversation!

The Winners were:

Best Speaker:  Deborah Russes
Best Table Topics: Laurie Finkelstein
Best Evaluator- Linnaea Mallette

About Linnaea

Profoundly hearing impaired since birth, Linnaea brought to the stage a lifetime of experience as a person with a hearing loss trying to stay connected with others. The skills she learned from following the 10 simple skills taught in Toastmasters gave her the foundation to speak eloquently on the TEDx stage. She is often called upon to speak for groups and on local radio. She is a funny, entertaining speaker and trainer.

The ability to express herself is not all Linnaea received from Toastmasters. The many speeches she developed and delivered at Toastmasters meetings now comprise about 60% of a book she wrote titled, “Hearing Loss Tips, for Those Who Have it and those who Don’t”.

Toastmasters, a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of speaking and leadership skills for members in clubs throughout the world, helps people, like Linnaea, find their voice.

Linnaea Mallette, DTM, a member of two Santa Clarita clubs, Daybreak Santa Clarita and Advanced Speakers of LA, is was one of 12 speakers at the first Camarillo TEDx event.

The theme for TEDx Camarillo was Unabridged. This theme alluded to telling the whole story, uncut, and uncensored. The Camarillo Public Library, is known for unabridged collections. They are a common offering.

Linnaea is also one of two Toastmasters working on the launch of a new Toastmasters club called Stagemasters. The club will be a coaching style club where members will learn techniques and staging skills for events such as TEDx and TED.

Daybreak Toastmasters is a club that is open to everyone. You can read about it at
