Inspiration Comes From Experiences

My inspiration for a talk I gave at College of the Canyons for Flex Week came to me while attending a training session for Toastmasters Area and Division Directors. Marshall W. Northcott was the trainer.

Here is the video of that presentation.

This presentation can be tweaked for any club. The original presentation was presented to the group with other slides and some of the same video clips. I took another idea, that of personal worth and incorporated it in to the original training. Your club may have another “passion” to present. The core of this presentation though is the emotional impact of the middle video.

Daybreak Wants to Start Your Day Right

Daybreak TaostmastersDaybreak Toastmasters is my home club. It is the club in Santa Clarita that fits my busy schedule as it meets BEFORE I start my day.

The meetings are at 7:00 AM on the second and fourth Thursday. We meet in the College of the Canyons University Center. Meeting consist of members giving prepared speeches; members participating in impromptu speaking, called Table topics and speech evaluations. On meeting days, it seems my day goes right.

I had a recent opportunity to give a presentation of a typical Daybreak meeting and an explanation of the Toastmasters Program.  You can experience that presentation here.

Toastmasters – Raise Your Personal Worth

The Toastmasters Program has the potential to raise the personal worth of its participants.

circe_denyer talking about personal worth and how Toastmasters helps raise that How much to you think you are worth? That is a loaded question and has many answers depending on which part of your life is being referenced. With respect to your job, your value is measured in the amount on your paycheck. With respect to your family, the number can jump exponentially. For today, let’s think about your personal worth and value you believe you have as a person interacting with others in a specific area, communication.

To find this value, you would have to assess your ability to communicate effectively on the subjects presented to you, both at work and at non-work interactions. How well do you perform when asked to give a presentation at work? Do you choke when asked a question you did not expect?

Warren Buffet has put a value on communication skills. In a presentation at Columbia University, he stated, “You can improve you value 50% by having better communication skills.” He took classes with Dale Carnegie to improve his speaking skills. Here in Santa Clarita, residents can improve their communication and leadership prowess locally in one of 6 Open (all welcome) Toastmasters clubs. Santa Clarita also has one corporate club in Advanced Biometrics Company.

Some have heard of Toastmasters and some have experienced it first hand in a Toastmaster club meeting. Those that have say it changed their lives. Debbi Rose Fields from Mrs. Fields Cookies is quoted as saying: “The idea of getting in front of a group, not as Mrs. Fields but as Debbi, made my knees shake. But the Toastmasters group understood. Here’s a place where you can learn, grow, develop — and where other people are doing and feeling the same thing.”

Linda Lingle, former Governor of Hawaii states, “Toastmasters is the best and least expensive personal improvement class you can go to.”

The host of the Discovery Home Channel’s hit show Neat, Hellen Buttigieg had this to say. “How often in life do people really listen to us? At Toastmasters, people are truly listening; they’re not thinking about what they’ll say back. It’s a safe place to speak, so I could use my speeches to work out what resonated with the audience.”

Each club in Santa Clarita is unique. Visiting the clubs is easy and free. For someone just starting out there are 5 clubs to choose from. Daybreak meets in the early morning (7:00 AM) on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month at the Diane Van Hook University Center in room 310. The four other clubs meet in the evenings. Quest: Every other Tuesday, 5:30 pm. SCV Chamber Speaks 1st & 3rd Tuesday, 6:00 PM. Valencia Toastmasters on the 2nd & 4th Wednesday at 6:30 pm. The Outliers 2nd & 4th Thursday, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM.
