About Linnaea

Profoundly hearing impaired since birth, Linnaea brought to the stage a lifetime of experience as a person with a hearing loss trying to stay connected with others. The skills she learned from following the 10 simple skills taught in Toastmasters gave her the foundation to speak eloquently on the TEDx stage. She is often called upon to speak for groups and on local radio. She is a funny, entertaining speaker and trainer.

The ability to express herself is not all Linnaea received from Toastmasters. The many speeches she developed and delivered at Toastmasters meetings now comprise about 60% of a book she wrote titled, “Hearing Loss Tips, for Those Who Have it and those who Don’t”.

Toastmasters, a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of speaking and leadership skills for members in clubs throughout the world, helps people, like Linnaea, find their voice.

Linnaea Mallette, DTM, a member of two Santa Clarita clubs, Daybreak Santa Clarita and Advanced Speakers of LA, is was one of 12 speakers at the first Camarillo TEDx event.

The theme for TEDx Camarillo was Unabridged. This theme alluded to telling the whole story, uncut, and uncensored. The Camarillo Public Library, is known for unabridged collections. They are a common offering.

Linnaea is also one of two Toastmasters working on the launch of a new Toastmasters club called Stagemasters. The club will be a coaching style club where members will learn techniques and staging skills for events such as TEDx and TED.

Daybreak Toastmasters is a club that is open to everyone. You can read about it at http://daybreaksantaclarita.com

PDC in Santa Clarita hosted a Toastmasters Demo Meeting

I was an evaluator at a Toastmaster demo meeting at PDCHealthcare, a Brady business. They create ID bracelets for visitors at hospitals and companies. The kiosk at the lobby used this technology to check the Toastmasters team into the facility.

Candi Smith from Valencia Toastmasters, who works at PDC Healthcare, met us there to escort us to the large meeting room. Six other Toastmasters joined her to conduct a one hour information meeting. Kathleen Lubin, club growth director, Linnaea Mallette and Circe Denyer from Daybreak Santa Clarita Toastmasters, George Conners and Susan DiMartini from Valencia Toastmasters along with Marc Richards of Quest.

Kathleen Lubin and Marc Richards began by giving the group an overview of what Toastmasters is and how it helps members achieve professional and personal growth.

Linnaea Mallette emceed the demonstration meeting. This part gave the audience a real feel of what it is like to attend a Toastmaster’s club meeting. This portion was filled with information, humor, and examples of how a meeting works.

Susan DiMartini, a brand new Toastmaster gave a speech called Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!. It was charming and was an opportunity to talk about how Toastmasters has helped her to overcome performance anxiety.

Circe Denyer, gave an evaluation of the speech, highlighting several points that she did well and offered two points of improvement for her next speech. This evaluation component is the unique value Toastmasters gives each member. The feedback a person gets after their speech is the way a speaker grows from step to step in their first ten Toastmaster projects.

George Connors acted in the role of Timer. He explained how Toastmasters learn to keep within time for speeches, Table Topics (impromptu speaking) and Evaluations.

Candi Smith did a great job asking for volunteers for the Impromptu Speaking section and Kathleen closed the meeting. All in one hour. Great team of volunteers. When this club becomes chartered, the employees will begin their journey to sucess.

Inspiration Comes From Experiences

My inspiration for a talk I gave at College of the Canyons for Flex Week came to me while attending a training session for Toastmasters Area and Division Directors. Marshall W. Northcott was the trainer.

Here is the video of that presentation.

This presentation can be tweaked for any club. The original presentation was presented to the group with other slides and some of the same video clips. I took another idea, that of personal worth and incorporated it in to the original training. Your club may have another “passion” to present. The core of this presentation though is the emotional impact of the middle video.
